Age limits for major Indian competitive exams (2026)

Age bars in Indian recruitment exams are unforgiving: your age is fixed to the cut-off date printed in the notification, and overshooting the ceiling by so much as one day is enough to see your form thrown out. The table below sums up the limits for the big exams so you can check yours at a glance.

How age is calculated for Indian competitive exams

What counts is not your age on exam day, nor the day you submit the form — it is your age on the cut-off date the notification names. For most exams that date is 1 January or 1 August of the exam year.

To put numbers on it: with a cut-off of 1 August 2026 and a ceiling of 32, only those born on or after 2 August 1994 make the cut. Cross that line by a single day and you drop out of eligibility for that cycle.

Age relaxation for reserved categories

  • OBC (non-creamy layer): the upper limit is raised by 3 years
  • SC / ST: an extra 5 years on top of the general ceiling
  • PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities): 10 more years for general, 13 for OBC, 15 for SC/ST
  • Ex-Servicemen: usually 3 to 5 years, depending on the exam
  • J&K residents (domicile): 5 additional years on several central exams
Note: both the age bars and the attempt caps can shift from one notification to the next. Lean on this calculator for a fast estimate, then cross-check the official notification for the exam you have your eye on.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my exact age online?
Fill in your birth date, pick the "age as of" date (it starts on today), and hit Calculate. In a moment you get your age broken into years, months and days, the total number of days you have lived, and how long until your next birthday.
What is the age limit for UPSC CSE (IAS)?
For the UPSC Civil Services Examination you must fall between 21 and 32 years on 1 August of the exam year. That ceiling rises to 35 for OBC (+3 years), 37 for SC/ST (+5 years), with a further 10 years for PwBD candidates.
What is the age limit for SSC CGL?
General-category candidates for SSC CGL must be 18 to 32 years on 1 January of the exam year, with 3 extra years for OBC and 5 for SC/ST. Some posts carry their own limits, so read the notification carefully.
How is age calculated for government jobs in India?
Your eligibility is fixed to the notification's cut-off date — usually 1 January or 1 August of the exam year — not the day you apply. The exact birth date is what counts, measured in completed years and months.
What is the age limit for IBPS PO?
General candidates for IBPS PO need to be 20 to 30 years on the notification date. OBC applicants get three more years (20 to 33) and SC/ST five more (20 to 35).
Does age relaxation apply automatically for OBC/SC/ST?
No — it is never automatic. You have to claim the relaxation while filling the form and back it up with a valid category or caste certificate, otherwise it will not be applied.
Is this age calculator accurate?
Yes. It works out the precise gap between your birth date and the chosen date in years, months and days, correctly handling months of different lengths as well as leap years.
Can I check eligibility for multiple exams at once?
Yes. As soon as your age is computed, the tool runs a general-category eligibility check across 10+ leading Indian competitive exams in one go.
