Age is fixed as on 1 January of the exam year. To qualify, you need a bachelor's degree in any stream from a recognised university.

SSC holds the CGL age bar firmly in place. Save for the category relaxations set out above, there is no leeway — slip past the limit by one day and you are ruled out for that cycle.
The reference point is 1 January of the exam year, not the day you submit the form or write the paper. Whether you qualify comes down to your age on that single fixed date.

Is there an age relaxation for OBC?
Yes — OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates get three extra years, pushing the ceiling to 35 on general posts. SC/ST get five more (up to 37) and PwBD ten more over the general limit.
What is the cut-off date for age calculation?
Your age is taken as on 1 January of the exam year, so a 2026 notification measures your age as on 1 January 2026.
What qualification do I need?
Any bachelor's degree from a recognised university is enough for most roles, though some — Statistical Investigator, for one — call for a specific degree in Statistics or Mathematics.
Is the upper age limit the same for every post?
No, it varies by post. The usual band is 18 to 32, but certain administrative and Inspector-level roles set it at 18 to 27 or 18 to 30 — check the post-wise list.
How many times can I attempt SSC CGL?
There is no cap on attempts. As long as you meet the age and qualification rules, you can apply year after year.
What is the SSC CGL photo size requirement?
The photo should be 275x354 pixels (roughly 3.5x4.5 cm), between 20 and 50 KB, saved as JPG, while the signature needs to be 236x79 pixels and 10 to 20 KB.
