The hydrocarbon (๐‘‹) with molar mass 80 g \(mol{}^{-1}\) and 90% carbon has ______ degree of unsaturation.

[JEE Main 2025, 24 Jan (Shift 2)]

a

1

b

2

c

3

d

4

โœ“ Correct answer: c)

3

Explanation

First calculate no. of Carbon and H atoms as:
Mass of carbon \(=\frac{80\times 90}{100}=72g\)
Number of C-atoms \(=\frac{72}{12}=6\)
Mass of hydrogen =80-72=8 g
Number of H -atoms \(=\frac{8}{1}=8\)
Molecular formula of hydrocarbon

\(={C}_{6}{H}_{8}\)

Degree of unsaturation =12+2-8 / 2=3
