Why convert PNG to JPG?
PNG is lossless — it preserves every pixel perfectly and can carry transparency. The downside is size: for photographs, PNG files dwarf their JPEG equivalents. An exam photo stored as PNG might weigh 500 KB–2 MB, whereas the very same photo saved as JPEG at 85% quality usually stays under 100 KB.
Indian exam portals — UPSC, SSC, IBPS, NTA, RRB — will almost always take JPEG/JPG and little else. So if your photo is a PNG, you will have to convert it before most application forms accept the upload.
What about transparency?
Transparent pixels have no place in a JPEG. When your PNG carries a see-through background — as logos, screenshots and edited photos often do — the converter paints those regions in the fill colour you select. For exam photos, white is always the safe pick.
