Why compress images?
Government exam portals in India — SSC, UPSC, IBPS, NTA, RRB and the rest — keep upload sizes small, generally 20–200 KB for a photo or document. Trouble is, a photo shot on a phone usually weighs 2–5 MB, far above those ceilings.
By packing the pixels more efficiently, compression brings the file down. Hold the JPEG quality at 70–85% and the screen looks the same, even though the file commonly loses 60–80% of its weight.
Compression vs. resizing — what's the difference?
- Compression leaves the pixel dimensions untouched and instead drops the encoding quality to trim the file.
- Resizing alters the actual width × height in pixels, which shrinks the file as well.
- If a portal caps only the KB, compress. If it caps both KB and dimensions, resize first, then compress.
