CGPA vs percentage — what Indian employers expect
CGPA, short for Cumulative Grade Point Average, is how universities roll up your semester-by-semester results into one figure. The 10-point version dominates in India, a shift that gathered pace once the UGC began promoting grade-based evaluation.
The catch is that employers and exam boards here still think in percentages. The moment a notification asks for a "minimum 60% in graduation", you have to run your CGPA through your university's official formula to see if you clear it.
UPSC and SSC: neither sets a graduation percentage bar, so there is nothing to convert. The picture changes for RBI Grade B, CAT admissions to the IIMs and several PSU roles, where a percentage cutoff applies and conversion becomes essential.
A word of caution: stick to your own university's official multiplier. Blindly multiplying by 10 or 9.5 can inflate your figure and lead you to claim eligibility you do not actually have.
