The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite measure of average achievement in human development, published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in its Human Development Report.

Three dimensions
HDI combines three dimensions: a long and healthy life (life expectancy at birth), knowledge (mean and expected years of schooling), and a decent standard of living (Gross National Income per capita).
Why it matters
HDI shifts the development focus from income alone to people's capabilities, and countries are ranked as low, medium, high or very high human development.
