The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is India's premier investigating agency, handling important criminal, corruption and special cases.

Origin and basis
The CBI was set up in 1963 and derives its powers from the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946. It is not a statutory body under a dedicated Act.
State consent
Since police is a State subject, the CBI generally needs the consent of a state government to investigate within that state, unless directed by a constitutional court.
