The IAEA applies safeguards and inspections to ensure nuclear material is not diverted to weapons. India has placed some civilian reactors under IAEA safeguards under its civil nuclear agreements.
Reporting
Though autonomous, the IAEA reports to both the UN General Assembly and the Security Council. It is often called the world's 'Atoms for Peace' organisation.
