Chemistry splits into three quite different ways of thinking — physical (calculation-heavy), organic (structure and reaction-heavy) and inorganic (fact-heavy) — and each chapter tends to sit clearly in one of those buckets. Knowing which mode a chapter needs before you start reading saves a lot of wasted effort.

Tip: For organic chapters especially, draw the reaction mechanisms out by hand at least once — recognising them, not reproducing them from memory, is the actual skill being tested.
