Water falls from a height of \( 60 \mathrm{~m} \) at the rate of \( 15 \mathrm{~kg} / \mathrm{s} \) to operate a turbine. The losses due to frictional forces are \( 10 \% \) of energy. How much power is generated by the turbine? (Take, \( g=10 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}^{2} \) )

[NEET 2021]

a

\( 8.1 \mathrm{~kW} \)

b

\( 10.2 \mathrm{~kW} \)

c

\( 12.3 \mathrm{~kW} \)

d

\( 7.9 \mathrm{~kW} \)

✓ Correct answer: a)

\( 8.1 \mathrm{~kW} \)

Explanation

\(\Rightarrow \text{ }P=15\frac{\text{ kg}}{\text{ s}}\times 10\times 60\)

\(\Rightarrow \text{ }P=9000\text{ W}\)

The friction losses,

\(\Rightarrow \text{ }L=9000\times \frac{10}{100}=900\text{ W}\)

The power generated by the turbine is equal to,

\(P=9000-900\)

\(\Rightarrow P=8100W\)

\(\Rightarrow P=8.1kW\)

The power generated by the turbine is 8.1 kW.
