The loss of water in liquid form from the tips or edges of leaves, especially at night or early morning, is called guttation.

This occurs when transpiration is low (due to high humidity and low temperature) and root pressure is high.

Root pressure is generated by the active uptake of minerals and water from the soil by roots, which pushes water up into the xylem and eventually out through hydathodes (special pores at leaf tips).
