The Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (COPRA) was enacted by the Parliament of India on 24 December 1986 to protect consumer rights and provide a mechanism for addressing consumer grievances.

• It came into effect on 24 December 1986, which is why National Consumer Rights Day is celebrated in India on 24th December every year.
• The Act established consumer dispute redressal forums at district, state, and national levels to resolve complaints.
